STATEMENT OF WORK:
Rhythms of color and line give coherence to constructions built up from the quirky ground of personal experience and belief. I work out of and into a sense of meaning that demands a synthesis of humility and grandeur. I see resurrection as an everyday occurance in this crisis time-bewildering, at once solemn and comic, but only a beginning. Spirituality is a funny business. Spirituality is slippery. We rise up ethereal, but we do discover ourselves in conflict, in changes of mind, in memory and piles of stuff. When the great Bell rings, we dive into our record players, trying to hear. Working in media heavy with tradition and history, I look around with my American-type eyes. Pathos and pratfalls and paint, optimistic at heart.

MEDIA:
Oil on canvas, oilstick and graphite on paper.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
Oil paintings, lyrical in color. The pencil drawingstend to be more complex in composition and enigmatic in imagery but the gap is closing from both directions. Also, smaller paintings and oilstick drawings. The desire for subtlety, richness and modulation and the desire for a direct and simple gesture constantly inform each other.
