Tape Talk

by Jamie

The following interview was faxed into the TIMES by jamie who is currently un dercover (p.6). The interview was a five way speaker phone conference call at three in the morning This is the essence of Truth & Justice...

jamie:What was your most memorable experience in the studio?
Jimmy: When we were recording Viet nam. I was really putting a lot of energy into the song and looking up, I saw Angela in the other room really getting into it, too.
jamie:The other room?
John: Yeah, Angela was singing in the control room and the rest of us were play ing in the main stud io.
jamie: Oh. Whataboutyou,Angela?
Angela: Well jamie, one of my most memorable experiences was recording Blue Green. See, Chris had this idea to record it live, all of us together, with a room feel. We thought it would be cool to remain true to the song and record it acoustically. The trouble is, try to get everyone to record each oftheir parts into one mic without f'ing them up. .. it doesn't happen! Somebody will inevitably be too loud or too soft. Of course, that was me. So we took another session trying to fix the live take. That didn't work so we tried to record it track by track. Wouldn't you know it... the live version from the first session was the one with the best feel? Perfect or not, there was a certain honesty... or should I say purity?... that existed, so we kept it. Just another example of how the Gods will play with us when we try to overcontrol things.

jamie: Wow. That's one of my favorite songs.
John: Blue Green?
jamie: Oh yeah, I ask questions all the time, you know. Why is the sky blue? Who am I really? What is your favorite vegetable?
Chris: Broccoli... steamed, fried, raw, in anything.
jamie: What??
John: Did you want my favorite meat?
Jimmy: No, your favorite vegetable.
jamie: Wait, I...
John: Oh, spinach, I just really love spinach.
jamie: No, no, I didn't mean...
Angela: Man, I could go for some vegetables.
Chris: Me too.
jamie: Wait, wait, wait. Back to the interview.
Angela: OK, it would be maize, the food of my people.
Jimmy: Greens for me. Horta... it's like a Greek weed.
jamie: STOP IT!
all: What?
jamie: Listen. Answer THIS question. What is your favorite song on the new tape?
John & Chris (together): Truth & Justice.
Jimmy: MTV, it's got that old 'Jane's Addiction' feel with like a female Perry Farrell.
Angela: Oh man, no comment. Can we go back to vegetables?
jamie: NONONONONO...
Chris: Is garlic a vegetable?
jamie: Forget it.
