Materialism

I can't bring myself to grieve for the loss of a material item. A rock I found by a stream taught me this lesson. As I held the rock, I said "What a beautiful stone, rounded, smooth, wonderful to touch. I should bring it home." A good friend I was with reminded me that as it is good to not leave anything behind when in the wild, for the sake of global continuity it is also wise not to leave with more than you came in with. That is when it dawned on me. Everything that you can hold, touch, smell, eat, hear, in fact, anything that can be experienced in any way has become part of your memory. It stays there and you can re-experience it any time you desire. Memory fades but as it does, that item or experience becomes part of you. It becomes part of everything that you are. When that memory is totally gone and you don't think about it anymore, it is still part of you. . . broken down and distributed throughout everything that you are. So, although I don't have that rock on my bedside table and the feel of it is not so prominent on my fingers, I still have it with me and always will. I suppose the same applies to the rock.
